The researchers of the SmarLET project from the GSIC/EMIC and UC3M research groups, together with UPM researchers, published a systematic literature review on Smart Learning Environments (SLEs) entitle “Affordances and Core Functions of Smart Learning Environments: A Systematic Literature Review” in the journal IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies. This paper attempts to arrive at a common understanding of SLEs and to identify what affordances make a learning environment smart, which technologies are used in SLEs and in what pedagogical contexts are used. Moreover, as a result, it identifies and explains specific core functions of SLEs.
