On May 26, 2021, the PostGraduate Program of Digital Transformation and Educational Praxis, Athens, Greece organized the webinar entitled: “Mixed Method approaches in Technology Enhanced Learning”: This webinar was delivered by Prof. Yannis Dimitriadis, the coordinator of the GSIC/EMIC research group. More than 80 graduate students and researchers attended the webinar through Youtube and Teams.
Positivist approaches have been dominant, and even synonymous sometimes, in scientific research. In the interdisciplinary research domain of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL), interpretive approaches using qualitative methods have been also proposed, generating a rather dogmatic battle with positivist approaches that employ quantitative research methods. In this talk we discuss some quality criteria that may span both types of approaches, introducing the eventual need for a pragmatic approach that suggests the use of mixed methods. We present some basic concepts and examples of mixed methods drawn from the TEL field, and discuss some implications and recommendations for young postgraduate researchers.
