GSIC/EMIC researchers attended the 11th International Learning Analytics and Knowledge Conference (LAK21)

The researchers of the SmartLET project from the GSIC/EMIC research group, Dr. Yannis Dimitriadis, Dr. Erkan Er, and Cristina Villa-Torrano, attended the 11th International Learning Analytics and Knowledge Conference, held online, between the 12th and 16th of April, 2021. During the event, the researchers participated and presented their work through the different sessions, and they co-organized pre-conference events.

Dr. Yannis Dimitriadis co-organized the pre-conference workshop on Human-Centered Learning Analytics. The very high demand for attendance in this workshop shows the increased interest and importance in this field. The second edition of this workshop will be carried out during the European Conference of Technology Enhanced Learning (ECTEL 2021), in which Dr. Dimitriadis will be the main organizer.

Dr. Erkan Er presented the work “Theory-based learning analytics to explore the student engagement patterns in a peer review activity”. This paper describes how the theory about peer review can inform the design of learning analytics and the interpretation of its results. In this study, the theory helped to determine relevant data points and to guide the top-down approach, emerging three levels of information: global phases of peer review, regulation of learning and micro-actions. Moreover, the data was analysed using a temporal approach with a process mining algorithm, resulting in different patterns of engagement depending on students’ performance.

PhD candidate Cristina Villa-Torrano presented the overview of her thesis “Building theory-informed learning analytics to understand and intervene in Socially-Shared Regulation of Learning” in the Doctoral Consortium and Poster sessions. Her thesis aims to provide actionable information through learning analytics grounded in the Socially-Shared Regulation of Learning theory by identifying and predicting patterns of shared regulation using trace data.
